CBD and ADHD

by BM Innovations on October 09, 2023

CBD is a well-known cannabinoid that is obtained from cannabis plants. Since it has the potential to treat a number of conditions, CBD is becoming very popular among the masses. CBD is not intoxicating, which is why it is legal to consume CBD products. Due to its so many health benefits, it is assumed that it can reduce ADHD symptoms. But can CBD really help with ADHD? Let us see what the research has to say about it.

How does CBD Affect the Body?

Our bodies contain an endocannabinoid system, which consists of many cannabinoid receptors and endocannabinoids produced by our bodies. This system regulates pain sensation, sleep, appetite, and immune response. CBD affects the activity of endocannabinoid receptors, thus reduce pain and inflammation and help reduce stress and anxiety. The effects of CBD are felt better when it is combined with THC.

ADHD Symptoms

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a condition that makes a person restless and he feels difficulty concentrating. This condition is more common in boys than girls. Generally, ADHD is categorized into behavioral issues of two different types: hyperactivity and inattentiveness. Not all people with ADHD have symptoms falling into both these categories. Some may experience trouble concentrating only, but they don’t face impulsiveness.

Therapeutic Benefits of CBD

Studies have shown that Pure CBD Oil effectively treats a range of conditions. CBD helps with neurological-based disorders, anxiety and mood disorders, pain relief, cancer-related symptoms, and inflammation by interacting with the endocannabinoid system. When consumed in the right amount, it doesn’t cause any harmful effects.

CBD in Relationship with ADHD

Studies concerning the use of CBD in treating ADHD are very limited. There is no scientific evidence showing CBD directly reduced the symptoms of ADHD.

We need more evidence on CBD and ADHD to understand if CBD actually helps with ADHD. It is certainly known that CBD oil is effective against some ADHD symptoms, including anxiety, as it was studied in 2016

In another study in 2017, it was found that patients with ADHD felt a reduction in their symptoms when they were treated with Sativex, which has THC and CBD. However, this reduction in symptoms is nowhere comparable to the improvement achieved through placebo.

Possible side effects

CBD is generally safe to consume. Unless it is taken with any other medication, it does not produce any side effects. At doses higher than 1500 mg per day, you may experience nausea, headache, dizziness, and appetite changes.

Pure natural CBD itself is not involved in worsening the symptoms of ADHD. The presence of THC in CBD products is likely to worsen ADHD symptoms, especially in impairing memory and attention.

Since people with ADHD face impulsiveness, they are likely to abuse cannabis. However, this can be minimized by carefully taking care of the patient during his/her treatment of ADHD with cannabis-related products.

Takeaways

The studies supporting the use of CBD for ADHD symptoms are minimal. Though it is known that CBD and THC combined proved beneficial against some symptoms of ADHD, we still need more research before making any claims. You should take your doctor’s advice before taking CBD for ADHD. He will certainly guide you in the best way to manage ADHD symptoms.
