CBD and Chronic Pain

People may choose to use CBD for many different reasons, but studies have shown that the number 1 reason is to help alleviate pain. But can CBD really help alleviate chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis, joint pain, and even neuropathy? And if so, how does CBD work to treat these conditions?

Aside from providing a host of benefits for our mental health, Cannabidiol can also be used to help treat many physical ailments as well. People use CBD to help manage the symptoms and pain of many conditions, including Fibromyalgia, IBS, migraine headaches, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and more.  The way CBD helps alleviate pain is multifaceted.

Firstly, CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, which in itself can help with the reduction of pain. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed, using an animal model, CBD applied the skin could help mediate chronic inflammatory pain related to arthritis. Another small study published in 2019 in Clinical Therapeutics found that a CBD ointment helped clear skin and reduce itch and inflammation.

Secondly, CBD has shown to help mediate our perception to pain in the body. CBD interacts with the bodies endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate and normalize many physiological processes, including pain, mood, stress, sleep, and immune system function.  Some studies suggest that CBD's interaction with the endocannabinoid receptors in our nervous system helps reduce our body's sensitivity to pain.

What Kind of CBD Product Should I Take for Chronic Pain?

In general, we recommend both sublingual and topical treatments for chronic pain related symptoms.

For sublingual related products, CBD oil is placed underneath the tongue for thirty seconds. The cannabinoid is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream without any degradation associated with first pass metabolism.  This will help with your overall perception of pain, and help you get through your day-to-day activities.

CBD topical products are oils and creams that are placed directly on the affected area, resulting in localized relief of pain.  The CBD will help moderate the chronic joint pain directly on the effected area.

Conclusion

The research surrounding CBD and its potential therapeutic effects has grown exponentially over the past decade.  Recent research has illustrated CBDs potential to help relieve chronic pain, along with a wide array of other therapeutic benefits. The main draw of people towards CBD is its absence of adverse effects. Many are transitioning from prescription drugs to a non-addictive CBD treatments for their corresponding ailments.  Although the research surrounding CBD is still ongoing, early trials are showing incredible results. The research surrounding CBD is just getting started, with more beneficial properties sprouting up every day.
