Heal With Nature CBD Guide

CBD Oil: Overview

What is Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical compound extracted from the cannabis plant.  Pure CBD is natural, non-habit forming, and nonpsychedelic.  Unlike THC, CBD does NOT get you high, but is usually associated with feelings of relaxation and calm.  CBD products typically have a THC concentration of less than .03% but be sure to read the product label for a more detailed description.

How does CBD interact with the human body?

CBD interacts with our body’s endocannabinoid system.  The Endocannabinoid System, or ESC, is a biological system responsible for the release of endocannabinoids, a type of neurotransmitter.  Endocannabinoids bind to cannabinoid receptors and proteins in our central and peripheral nervous system. For more information on the ECS and the latest research surrounding CBD, check out Heal With Nature's CBD and The ECS page! For more information on the CBD as it relates to Health, check our Heal With Natures CBD and Heath Guide!

Will I get high off CBD?

All CBD products should be examined via the product label.  BUT typically CBD products have a THC concentration of less than 0.3%.  Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the compound responsible for making people feel high.  What gets people confused is where the CBD oil is extracted.  Both THC and CBD are extracted from the SAME cannabis plant, but both compounds can be isolated from one another. Manufactures typically infuse CBD into tinctures, edibles, topicals, soft gels and other products.  These products, by law, can not contain more than 0.3 percent THC. This is not enough to create any psychoactive symptoms.

For more information on the different types of CBD products and their intended use, check out Heal With Nature's article, 'Which CBD product is right for me?'

Why use CBD?

CBD oil gives people the independence to treat themselves with a natural, non-habit forming, homeostatic remedy.  CBD could lessen the costly need for potentially harmful prescription drugs.  Recently, CBD has become the forefront of scientific research resulting in experts all over the world uncovering the benefits CBD oil has on the body’s physiological system.  Although this is a relatively new area of study, there have been no serious side effects recorded with excessive CBD oil use.  It is not possible to overdose or become addicted to CBD oil.

How much CBD should I take?

Most dosages range anywhere between 20 and 1,500 milligrams (mg) per day, with no adverse effects associated with dosage.  You cannot overdose on CBD. You cannot get high off pure CBD products. For more information on the different CBD products, and their potential benefits, check out Heal With Nature's CBD Product Guide!

Is CBD legal?

Any hemp-derived CBD product with a THC percentage of less than 0.3 percent, is legal on the federal level but is still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and the laws of anywhere you travel before using.

What do the following terms mean; Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and CBD Isolate?

There are different variations of CBD.  For example CBD isolates are 100% THC free.  Full Spectrum CBD are made using full spectrum hemp extract, which contains THC levels of less than 0.3%.  Broad Spectrum products contain additional cannabinoids, but no THC. Due to a lack of regulation, companies and consumers sometimes confuse these terms — particularly broad-spectrum CBD and CBD isolate — and use them incorrectly.

  • Full-spectrum CBD: This CBD contains all the phytochemicals that occur naturally in the cannabis plant, such as various other cannabinoids, terpenes, and oils. It also contains some trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive compound in marijuana that produces the “high” effect.
  • Broad-spectrum CBD: This CBD contains all the phytochemicals that are in the cannabis plant but no THC.
  • CBD isolate: CBD isolate is the pure form of CBD.

The Benefits of CBD Oil

What are the Physical Benefits of CBD Oil?

The body naturally produced these neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids.  Endocannabinoids interact with cannabinoid receptors within our brain.  CBD stimulates the production of more endocannabinoid, and basically disrupts the communication between our body and its receptors in the brain.  So, why would this biological disruption be beneficial?  CBD could then inhibit pain signals from reaching the brain, thus providing pain relief for the individual.

What are the Mental and Emotional Benefits of CBD Oil?

CBD oil elicits a response from our brain to release Serotonin, a hormone that affects our moods and behaviors.  The extended release of this hormone could improve a diverse array of emotional issues we see daily; these include anxiety, stress, and even depression.

What are the Neurological Benefits of CBD Oil?

CBD oil has also shown to work with the endocannabinoid system to curb the onset of symptoms such as muscle spasms, convulsions, and seizures, thus providing possible improvement to chronic mental conditions like multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

The Different Cannabinoids

What are Cannabinoids?

'Cannabinoids' is a term used to describe the closely related compounds included in the cannabis plant.

Will Cannabinoids get me high?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the cannabinoid responsible for getting people "High." The majority of the rest of the cannabinoids in a cannabis plant are not known to produce these psychoactive effects.

What are some of the most common Cannabinoids?

  • THC
  • CBD
  • CBN
  • CBG
  • CBC
  • CBL
  • CBV
  • and more!

What are the benefits of CBN?

CBN stands for cannabinol.  People originally thought it was responsible for the cannabis high, but later found out that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) produces for the intoxicating effects of cannabis. It was discovered that CBN is actually an oxidation product of THC; that is, THC will slowly turn into CBN when exposed to light and heat. CBN on its own does not produce intoxicating effects, however, to the best of our knowledge, the effects of this cannabinoid have not been fully researched in human subjects.

While more research into the effects of CBN are needed to make any surefire claims, existing evidence has shown that this relatively unknown cannabinoid could yield a vast array of benefits. These benefits include:

  • Increased relaxation
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Anti-convulsive properties
  • Appetite stimulant
  • Enhanced sleep
  • Pain mediation

What is CBG?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is considered the parent cannabinoid to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).  CBG does not make you feel “high” or “stoned.”  On the contrary, CBG may counteract the psychoactive effects of THC.  CBG interacts directly with the cannabinoid receptors in the brain, and has been shown to fight inflammation, pain, nausea and even slows the proliferation of cancer cells.

Early studies links CBG to a host of potential therapeutic uses, such as:

  • Treating glaucoma, though its vasodilator and neuroprotective effects.
  • Decreasing inflammation, as seen in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Combatting Huntingdon’s disease, again through its neuroprotective effects.
  • Inhibiting tumor growth, in animal models of colorectal cancer.
  • Killing drug-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are aromatic compounds responsible for the unique aroma associated with plants like cannabis, pine, and lavender.  Aside from fragrance, terpenes may also offer some health benefits to the human body.  As regulations surrounding cannabis become less stringent, the research surrounding the potential therapeutic effects of these plants and the associated terpenes are becoming more prominent. CBD and Pets

Many people don’t realize this, but CBD can be just as beneficial for your furry loved ones as it is for you. Because both cats and dogs have an endocannabinoid system, they are able to absorb and get the same benefits of CBD as humans. CBD has been shown to treat a variety of ailments in animals, from anxiety and stress to chronic pain and inflammation, and can even help manage seizures and symptoms caused by cancer.

How Much CBD Should I Give My Cat or Dog?

Before giving your pet CBD, you have to first find out what their proper dosage should be. If you already know your pet’s weight, this is very simple. If not, if your pet is light enough to be picked up, the easiest way to get their accurate weight is to hold them while weighing yourself, then weigh yourself separately and take the difference.

The recommended dosage for cats and dogs is generally between 1-3mg for every 10 pounds of body weight. The range from 1-3mg depends on the severity of your pet’s ailments and their overall tolerance levels. It is recommended to start at the lower end of this scale and slowly increase to find their perfect dosage.

CBD to Treat Anxiety in Pets

Does your dog get anxious during thunderstorms or long car rides? Will your cat hide under the bed whenever you have company over? CBD for pets can help calm their nerves and put them at ease. There are two main types of anxiety that your pet can be suffering from: situational and behavioral.

Situational anxiety occurs when there is a stressor in the environment which is causing them to behave differently. An example of situational anxiety would be if you are traveling, or taking them to the vet. Your pet will likely show symptoms of anxiety, such as shallow breathing, trembling, and whimpering. To treat situational anxiety, pet CBD should be given before the expected stressor to help avoid these symptoms and lessen their overall stress.

Behavioral anxiety is a more pervasive type of anxiety, and will likely affect your dog or cat on a daily basis. Just like humans, behavioral anxiety can either be caused by past traumatic experiences or can simply be a genetic predisposition. Symptoms of behavioral anxiety in pets can often manifest as timidness, aggression, poor appetite, and sometimes continence issues. To treat behavioral anxiety, your pet will likely need to take CBD supplements on a daily basis to help manage their overall anxiety levels.

CBD to Treat Chronic Pain and Inflammation in Pets

Numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects CBD can have on patients suffering from chronic pain and inflammation. More specifically, pet CBD can be used to treat and manage pain caused by arthritis and cancer.

You might be wondering, ‘How much CBD oil should I give my dog?’ A daily dose of as little as 1-3mg per 10 pounds of body weight has been shown to improve your pet’s comfort and mobility. And the good news is that CBD oil does not come with the long list of negative side effects as their usual prescription medication. CBD for cats and dogs can help with chronic pain by both reducing inflammation in the body and also binding with pain receptors to reduce your pet’s overall pain levels.

As always, it is recommended that your pet’s specific situation be evaluated by a veterinarian. Ask your vet about how adding CBD oil to your pet’s care regimen can help manage their symptoms.

Tips to Give Your Pet CBD Oil

Because our products come directly in oil form, you won’t have to worry about pill pockets or having to hide it in their food. Most dogs love getting their CBD oil directly from the tincture. This should be presented as a treat or reward for doing something good so that they form a positive association with it. However, if your cat or dog is a bit more fussy, you can simply mix the oil into their usual meal.

If you’re feeling extra creative, you can even create your own homemade treats with CBD oil. CBD pet recipes such as peanut butter biscuits and no-bake pumpkin spice treats are a real hit with the pups. Cats, on the other hand, seem to really love some homemade CBD-infused sweet potato or tuna-based snacks.

As always, it is recommended that your pet’s specific situation be evaluated by a veterinarian. Ask your vet about how adding CBD oil to your pet’s care regimen can help manage their symptoms.
