Cannabis and hemp plants contain cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), known as the precursor to all the other hemp-related cannabinoids. Due to this, CBGA is often called the 'mother cannabinoid’. In other words, CBGA is essential for the production of other cannabinoids, including CBD and THC.
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-acidic form of cannabigerolic acid. A heat source transforms CBGA into CBG (similar to how THCA is converted into THC). Hence, whenever CBGA is heated, it converts into CBG.
Because CBGA is the acidic version of CBG, both CBG and CBGA share many similarities. However, due to the absence of carboxyl group in CBG, their chemical structure is slightly different. C₂₁H₃₂O₂ is the molecular formula of CBG.
CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) is the principal precursor compound of most cannabinoids.
CBGA converts into tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabichromenic acid (CBCA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). Light or heat causes the conversion of these compounds, resulting in CBDA becoming CBD.
The cannabis products that usually contain high levels of THC (the psychoactive compound) make you high. However, CBDA and CBGA products do not work the same way as cannabis-derived products mainly because they do not contain the psychoactive compound. For this reason, they will not make you high like other products that contain THC.
Non-psychoactive cannabis preparations are permitted for over-the-counter sale in states where cannabis is legal for medical use but not for recreational use. The CBGA or CBDA products you may be using, may or may not contain THC. Hence, it is best to check your state laws to determine whether CBGA or CBDA is legal or not. However, the CBDA and CBGA products are available in all states. Checking state laws carefully before making the purchase will prevent you from trouble.
In general, as long as they are sourced from hemp and contain less than the federally-mandated 0.3% Delta 9 THC level, both compounds are protected by the 2018 Farm Bill and therefore federally legal.
Our body contains two types of cannabinoid receptors—CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in the nervous system and brain, while CB2 receptors are located in the immune system and other areas of the body.
CBG works by binding to both receptors where it’s thought to strengthen the function of anandamide, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in enhancing pleasure and motivation, regulating appetite and sleep, and alleviating pain.
Like CBD, CBG has been used to combat pain without having the intoxicating effect of cannabinoids like THC.
Research shows that CBG can also have therapeutic effects. However, human studies on this are sparse and more research needs to be done in this area.
Some promising animal studies show that CBG might ultimately be found useful for the following therapeutic benefits listed below.
CBGA oils are available online. There are various brands that produce CBGA oil and they can be ordered online. Make sure that you order from a reliable source as there are many fake brands that sell unreliable products. You can also check out CBGA oils at healwithnature - Pure CBD. Full spectrum CBGA oils are available at healwithnature.
